Common entrance is often known as just CE. These are the examinations that determine whether pupils can obtain entry to a particular public secondary school. The exams are set by ISEB (Independent Schools Examination Board) but the papers are marked by the relevant public secondary school. The core subjects are Maths, English and Science but often include one or more of French, German, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Geography, History and Religious Studies. Sometimes pupils sit these exams at different levels, depending on the requirements of the public secondary school and the pupil’s abilities. There are usually three exam sessions per year (January, June and November) with June being the most common.
