In September 2015 we ran our first Familiarisation Day. This has now become a regular event on the Chatterton Tuition calendar. Attendance is FREE to everyone regardless of whether they have tuition with us, with an optional charge for test marking. Booking is essential.
For 2020 – the Familiarisation Day is still TBA – we are still waiting to find out when the actual day of the 11+ test will be. We always use our own unique papers, which are tailored to match the real 11+ papers for Ripon Grammar entry.

What is the date in 2020?
The date is still to be advised (morning) at Ripon Grammar School. For the second time, in 2020, there is only one day scheduled for the Selection Tests; up until 2018, the Tests were run on two consecutive Saturdays, with children attending both dates and their better VR and NVR scores being used to determine their overall score.
Results letters are usually posted out to families by post around the middle of October.
What is non-verbal reasoning?
Non-verbal reasoning questions are designed to test a child’s ability to recognise patterns, similarities, and analogies in unfamiliar concepts. They are required to make sense of new information and to apply that information. It gives an indication to the school of how well the child will master new materials and concepts in later school life.
What is verbal reasoning?
Verbal reasoning questions are designed to test a child’s verbal skills. The child will need to demonstrate their ability and understanding of the rules of language. The child will need to be able to identify pattern, similarity and difference between words. These tests are useful as an indication to the school of the potential of the child to learn in later school life.
Applying to the local authority
If you live out of catchment, or your child attends a school out of catchment, then you must make sure you apply for them to sit the 11+ exam. The date you need to apply by is generally 14th August (actual date will be posted as and when we know). You need to apply in writing or by email to Harrogate Borough Council, or through the North Yorkshire County Council website.
